Today's thought: Do the right thing.
In any situation, whether it be business, family, or social, do the right thing. Don't get caught up in undignified behavior just because someone else is. That is neither a reason nor an excuse to follow their lead. Be the example of professional, civilized, loving behavior; live your best possible life; do the right thing.
Wishing you the courage and determination to behave in a civilized manner, regardless of what is going on around you.....and peace, joy and love, always.

Our thoughts matter.
Friday, January 30, 2015
Today's thought: Our thoughts matter.
What has been taught in the past by the Masters has been proven by scientific research. Our thoughts matter. Our thoughts make our world. The Buddha taught this over two thousand years ago; the Bible tells us that "it will be done unto us according to our beliefs;" and, more recently, the process is explained to us by Thomas Hanna.
"What the neurophysiological research of the past several decades tells us is that the kind of thoughts we think determines the quality and effectiveness of our lives. Because thinking is an action of the entire body that mobilizes the entire sensorimotor system, the nature of our thinking activity automatically determines the nature of our bodily activity. If we turn the same anxious thoughts over in our minds day after day, then it is certain that we are tensing and activating certain contractions in our bodies day after day. And it is just as certain that these afflicted parts of our bodies will, through this daily abuse, become fatigued and damaged.
'When we think the same thoughts of revenge over and over again, we are activating the muscles and glands of our bodies over and over again. When we repeat the same thought of disappointment over and over again, we are repeatedly stamping its motor power into the tissues of our body until they sag in forlornness. When we repeatedly think thoughts or memories of hurt, despair, anger, or fear, we are physically injuring ourselves; we are engaging in self-destruction."
Wishing you the deep realization that you can change your life when you change your thoughts, you can become a positive thinker, a seeker of solutions, a light in the darkness for all.
Peace. Joy. Love, always.

Best friends.
Thursday, January 29, 2015
Today's thought: Best friends.
So often, we think of 'best friends' as people we meet who are kind, supportive, loving, and with whom we have things in common; and those best friends become life's treasures. More important than those treasures, we need to find the treasure within ourselves and become best friends with ourselves. In every situation of our lives, we need to encourage ourselves to do the best we can, be kind to ourselves when others are not, and love ourselves to wholeness. We are all children of God, worthy of love and respect, and we also need to love and respect ourselves. God does!
Wishing you the blessing of many best friends, including yourselves.....and peace, joy, and love, always.

Be kind.
Wednesday, January 28, 2015
Today's thought: Be kind.
From the writings of Fr. Henri Nouwen:
"When we honestly ask ourselves which person in our lives means the most to us, we often find that it those who, instead of giving advice, solutions, or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with a warm and tender hand."
Be kind. All of the world is in need of kindness, peace, joy, and love.

Only good.
Tuesday, January 27, 2015
Today's thought: Only good.
From the writings of Abraham:
"We would like you to reach the place where you're not willing to listen to people criticize one another.....where you take no satisfaction from somebody being wrong.....where it matters to you so much that you feel good, that you are only willing to think positive things about people.....you are only willing to look for positive aspects; you are only willing to look for solutions, and you are not willing to beat the drum of all the problems of the world."
When we all choose to feed the positive aspects in our lives, the negative will no longer exist.
Wishing you the blessing of realizing that you do have choice, you do have control, you do have the power to change your life.....and peace, joy, and love, always.

What can I learn from this?
Sunday, January 25, 2015
Today's thought: What can I learn from this?
There are several schools of thought of why bad things happen in our lives. Some believe they are challenges from God to test our faith and make us stronger as we bear them and live through them. Some believe they are a result of karma, past actions that we must now face and resolve. Some believe life is a learning-and-growing experience, and that we all have good and bad things happen in our lives. And others believe we draw to ourselves, through the Universal Law of Attraction, whatever we focus on.
Regardless of your beliefs, when bad things happen, ask yourself, "What can I learn from this?" There is something to be learned in each experience, and that 'something' may be different for each of us. Learn the lesson and let the experience go. Learn the lesson and move on. When you are able to do this, each day will be a joy.
Wishing you the blessing of joyful days.....and peace and love, always.

Saturday, January 24, 2015
Today's thought: Do something wonderful.
From the writings of Albert Schweitzer:
"Do something wonderful; people may imitate it."
How wonderful the world would be if all of us used our minds and energies towards positive goals. Let those who understand the far-reaching effects of positive words and actions continue to do good, and the world will become a better place for all.
Wishing you the realization of all the blessings poured down upon us all.....and peace, joy and love, always.

Meditation
Friday, January 23, 22015
Today's thought: Meditation
From Buddhist writings:
"Meditation practice isn't about trying to throw ourselves away to become something better. It's about befriending who we are already."
Who we are already is a spiritual being having a physical experience. In the stillness of meditation, we become more and more aware of the Spirit of God within us; the everpresent and everlasting peace that is already, and always, ours.
Wishing you the blessing of experiencing the peace within you.....and joy and love, always.

Words about words.
Thursday, January 22, 2015
Today's thought: Words about words.
Let us not be careless with our words. Words have the power to create, and to destroy.
Words, once said, can never be unsaid, and no amount of "sorry" can change that.
Words are like ripples on a stream flowing into the Universe. We will never know to what extent those who hear or read them will be affected,
Words live for centuries in myth and folklore, passed down from generation to generation.
Printed words survive for thousands of years, read by countless eyes. Carefully choose the words you commit to paper. Equally carefully, choose what you read.
Words live in our minds and hearts, either adding to or diminishing our self-esteem, self-respect, sense of well-being and quality of life.
Words spoken in the present become a part of both our future and our past.
Some words are best left unwritten and unsaid. Nothing everything needs to be known by everyone.
Words can build bridges of understanding. Words can soothe a troubled heart.
Harsh words can shatter the fragile self-esteem of a child.
Words can elevate minds to their highest potential. Words can drag us down to places best not imagined.
Words can destroy dreams. Gossip can kill a marriage.
Teasing is cruel.....not funny.....cruel.
We are responsible for our words and held accountable for them. Our words reveal without a shadow of a doubt, who we are in our minds, hearts, and souls. Words have power. Take care how you use them.
Wishing you all the blessings you wish for.....and peace, joy, and love, always.

Happy Birthday, Blog!
Wednesday, January 21, 2015
Today's thought: Happy Birthday, Blog!
One year ago today, I posted the first blog: "Things I learned along the way," in the form of a letter to my nieces and all others who would visit the site. The words are still relevant and, from time to time, I think we all need reminders. I certainly do. So, for myself and those of you who are so kind and supportive as to visit this site, here are some of the 'things I learned along the way.'
"Daughters of my heart...and others,
'In the coming months, I hope to share with you some of the lessons I have learned in this experience called Life. You may not agree with my thoughts and beliefs, and that's fine. We are not clones of one another, nor are we meant to be. Trust your own instincts. Follow your own heart. Be still, and listen to the one true voice within.
'It is important to understand that whatever you do comes back to you. Whatever you do, you do to yourself, first and foremost, and then, like a ripple effect, it affects all those whose lives you touch. You cannot do good to others without doing good to yourself. You cannot do harm to others without doing harm to yourself. The law of cause and effect...Universal law...karma...God's law, do exist. Call it what you will, it operates the same for everyone. Please don't fool yourself into thinking you can get away with anything. To paraphrase the poet, "Tho' the mills of the Gods grind slowly, yet they grind exceedingly fine." The law operates 24/7, no exceptions, no excuses, no escape.
'When you have thoughts and feelings of goodwill, love, and affection, those thoughts and feelings cause positive, healthy chemicals to be released from the brain and to circulate throughout your body. In the same way, angry thoughts, words and actions cause to be released, harmful, negative chemicals to course throughout the body. Whatever we think, speak, and do is recorded within us, in our memories our postures, our mannerisms, our voices, and our expressions, visible to all. Impossible to hide who and what we are from those who have learned to see.
'Try not to be careless in your language and manners. Language and manners civilize us. Our own language and manners broadcast to others how we expect to be treated, and whether we will tolerate crude language and disrespect. We alone choose whether to use healing, positive, beautiful words, or destructive, negative, vulgar words. Language reveals who we are in a flash.
'Manners reveal how we feel about others and, also, how we feel about ourselves. Manners is the art of being kind. Language and manners have the power to heal or destroy.
'In this age of instant communication, where it seems to be acceptable for everyone to tell everything, all manner of words are flung about carelessly. It seems to have been forgotten that all words, like all actions, have consequences. Words are important. Words have power. Words help shape who you are and who you will become."
The remaining portion of this letter, "A few more words about words:" will appear in tomorrow's blog. My thanks and appreciation to all of you for your interest and support.
Wishing you blessings beyond counting.....and peace, joy, and love, always.

A good thing.
Tuesday, January 20, 2015
Today's thought: A good thing.
Before you go to sleep each night, think of at least one good thing that happened during your day; something that made you smile, something for which you are deeply grateful. Take that thought with you into your sleep state and you will be more rested and refreshed when you wake up the next morning. When your mind is rested, it is easier to face and resolve whatever the new day brings.
Wishing you the blessing of peaceful, restful nights of sleep.....and peace, joy, and love, always.

Never alone.
Monday, January 19, 2015
Today's thought: Never alone.
We are never alone. We can, at any time, be still and know that God is within us and around us, as this beautiful prayer from Unity tells us.
"The light of God surrounds us;
The love of God enfolds us;
The power of God protects us;
The presence of God watches over us.
Wherever we are, God is!"
Wishing you the blessing of knowing that we are never alone.....and peace, joy, and love, always.

Today's thought: Peace

"Peace is found through surrender to good, through devotion. People who are loving, who practice stillness, and delight in meditation and good actions, are really peaceful. Peace is the altar of God, the condition in which happiness exists."
Wishing you the blessing of peace in thought, word, and action.....and joy and love, always.

Teachers
Saturday, January 17, 2015
Today's thought: Teachers
"A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops." Henry Brooks Adams
We are all teachers. We teach in a classroom or by example, and we can never tell when a smile, a kind word, a helping hand will change someone's path in life for the better, possibly even save a life.
And we are all students, either in classrooms or in the school of life. As students, it is in our own best interests to learn as much as we can as we go through this life's experiences. Whatever we learn benefits us and all those whose lives we touch, and the lives they touch, making this planet a better place for all of us.
Wishing you the blessing of learning life's lessons the first time you hear them.....and peace, joy, and love, always.

Today's thought: Friends
From the writings of Kahlil Gibran:
"In the sweetness of friendship let there be laughter, and sharing of pleasures. For in the dew of little things the heart finds its morning and is refreshed."
"Friendship is always a sweet responsibility, not an opportunity."
Today I celebrate the birthday of the dearest friend in all the world to me, one who changed my life, enriching it beyond measure, by being my friend. Treasure your friends as precious gifts, angels in disguise.
Wishing you the blessing of friends you can treasure.....and peace, joy, and love, always.

Enjoy your day!
Thursday, January 15, 2015
Today's thought: Enjoy your day!
In going through some old folders of notes and inspirational materials, I came across the following which was printed in a Unity Church bulletin some years ago. It made me smile, and it brought to mind once again that God is in charge of the Universe and has solved problems larger than mine.
"Good Morning,
This is God:
I will be handling all your problems today,
and I will not need your help.
So enjoy your day!"
Wishing you the blessing of enjoying every day.....and peace, joy, and love, always.

Today, look for good.
Wednesday, January 14, 2015
Today's thought: Look for good.
In any situation, in every person, there is something good. Today, let us resolve to look and find the good in wherever we are and in whomever we meet. Sometimes it's easier than other times but if we continue to do this, we find more and more good that makes our lives better and better. Many things are just a matter of habit. Looking for the good wherever we are can become habitual and healing to the mind and heart.
Today, look for good.
Wishing you the blessing of looking for the good, and finding it everywhere,.....and peace, joy, and love, always.

Finding God.
Tuesday, January 13, 2015
Today's thought: Finding God.
From the writings of Mother Teresa:
"We need to find God, and He cannot be found in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence. See how nature - trees, flowers, grass - grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence...We need silence to be able to touch souls."
We need silence to touch our own soul.
Peace, joy, and love, always.

Why not now?
Monday, January 12, 2015
Today's thought: Why not now?
If you have been thinking of following a dream, why not start now? Perhaps you want to learn a new skill, enlarge your circle of friends, volunteer at a shelter, begin to meditate, or write a book. In the beginning, surround your dream with love and silence. Don't talk about it until it is so firmly established in your mind and heart that possible negative comments from others will not affect its growth, or your positive feelings.
Now is always the perfect time to begin. It doesn't matter that you didn't do it last week, last month, last year....or ten years ago. What matters is now; and now is always and the only time to begin.
Wishing you the courage to follow your dreams and time enough to see them all come true.
Peace. Joy. Love, always

Everywhere sacred, everything holy.
Sunday, January 11, 2015
Today's thought: Everywhere sacred, everything holy.
If we truly believe that God is in every cell and atom of creation, and creation is all there is, then everything is holy and we all stand and walk on sacred ground. When we allow that thought to become a part of our daily thinking, we will begin to treat all things and all people more gently, more respectfully, more calmly, more peacefully. The most beautiful part of this is that those qualities will become so deeply imbedded in us, that we will become those qualities, and we will have the deep realization that we already are one with God.
We don't have to go to heaven to experience God. We don't have to go to hell to experience the absence of God. We don't have to go anywhere. He is always everywhere. All we have to do is open our minds and hearts to the realization that He is everywhere with us, always. And there are always more blessings than we could possibly count, if we would but take the time to realize it.
Wishing you the realization that when you put God first, everything else you need and want will naturally follow.
Peace. Joy. Love, always.

Slow down.
Saturday, January 10, 2015
Today's thought: Slow down.
It seems so many are always in a hurry. Some feel they should be able to multitask, and others zoom past us on highways as if we were standing still. There are emergency situations when it is imperative that we move and do what needs to be done as quickly as possible but, for most of us, emergencies are not a part of our daily lives. When we hurry, hurry, rush, rush through our day, we miss the little things that calm and soothe the mind and heart. We incur unnecessary stress, and we may overlook our connection to Spirit, the God center within us.
The Greek philosopher, Socrates, who lived from 470B.C to 399B.C, asked that we "Beware the barrenness of a busy life." More recently, John O'Donuhue wrote that too many had embraced "the religion of rush."
Slow down. Refresh your mind, heart, and soul with the little moments that make life so precious. Listen to a child's laugh; carry a balloon; fly a kite; smile at yourself; tell someone you love that you love them; and be grateful that you are a part of life where anything is possible.
Wishing you happy and blessed moments throughout your days.....and peace, joy, and love, always.

This day.
Friday, December 9, 2015
Today's thought: This day.
The following is an Ancient Sanskrit Poem:
Look to this day
for it is life,
the very life of life.
In its brief course lie all
the realities and truths of existence,
the joy of growth,
the splendor of action,
the glory of power,
For yesterday is but a memory,
And tomorrow is only a vision,
But today well lived
makes every yesterday a memory of happiness
and every tomorrow a vision of hope.
Look well, therefore, to this day!
From different messengers, and in different ages, comes the same message. THIS day is important; NOW is important; this day is when the choices are made that will affect all of our tomorrows.
With all my heart, I wish for all of you the understanding that will make all your days happier beyond your wildest dreams.....and peace, joy, and love, always.

In the hands of God.
Thursday, January 8, 2015
Today's thought: In the hands of God.
Sometimes it seems difficult not to worry. Let me share what has helped me so many times and what, I hope, will help you, too. If your concern is about what is happening to you, keep repeating the affirmation of faith, "Thank you, God, that you hold me safely in the palm of Your hand." If your concern is for someone else, you can say the same affirmation of faith, using their name. This will help to calm your mind and you will be able to think more clearly what is the best way for you to help yourself or others.
Wishing you the awareness that God is everywhere and always holding us safely in the palm of His hand.....and peace, joy, and love.

Gratitude
Tuesday, January 6, 2015
Today's thought: Gratitude
Stand in the middle of any room in your home or apartment; mentally list everything in that room, including the ceiling, walls, and floor. Someone's hands made all that you see; someone's hands and mind worked to earn the means to purchase all that you see. It may have been you. Be grateful for all you see, all you have, all you are, and all you hope to be. We can never be too grateful for all of our blessings.
Gratitude is the key to everything. Gratitude for all you already have is the magnet that draws to you all that you want.
Wishing you the full awareness of all your blessings.....and peace, joy, and love, always.

A neutral attitude toward life.
Monday, January 5, 2015
Today's thought: A neutral attitude toward life.
Today we celebrate the anniversary of the birthdate of Paramahansa Yogananda, who brought Yoga to the western world in 1920 and founded the Self-Realization Fellowship in California at that time. Yogananda's life story can be read in his "Autobiography of a Yogi," and currently viewed in a movie of his life, entitled "Awake." The 'Self' in Self-Realization pertains to God, and that we come to the realization that God is indeed in the self. Had he been Catholic, he would certainly have been declared a saint for his service to God and man.
One of his teachings is to keep a part of your mind always on God as you go about your daily work and other activities. Another is to 'develop a neutral attitude toward life,' letting the emotions neither go too high nor too low. I have come to understand that when we are able to develop a neutral attitude toward life, it is because we trust in God who is in charge of all life, which allows us to calmly do what we can in all situations. When the mind and heart are centered in God and in peace, solutions to all situations and challenges present themselves.
Today we celebrate the birth of a man of God, a beautiful soul who has made a difference in the lives of millions, worldwide. Let us thank God for him and all others God has sent into the world to be a light in the lives of all of us.
Wishing you the blessings of a calm and peaceful mind, heart, and soul.....and love and joy, always.

My mother's advice.
Sunday, January 4, 2015
Today's thought: My mother's advice.
Today is the anniversary of my mother's birth, 1897, in a small European village. My mother was a woman of strong character and beautiful soul. As far back as I can remember, I remember she was always helping someone...family, neighbors, friends. My mother left this physical world when I was only thirty-four years of age, and I have had many years to reflect on the wisdom of her advice. What I remember her telling me the most often was, "Take care of yourself." Those were the last words she spoke to me before she slipped into a coma and, later, passed into the Light.
And those are the words I pass on to you, dear friends and readers, on the anniversary of her birth: Take care of yourselves for no one else can. No one else can think for you, eat for you, sleep for you, and no one else can know the dreams of your heart, mind, and soul. No one else can be still for you and listen to the Spirit within you, which will guide you to your highest good. Take care of yourselves.
Wishing you the blessing of unconditional love, as mothers love.....and peace and joy, always.

Our perfect place.
Saturday, January 3, 2014
Today's thought: Our perfect place.
We are already in our perfect place and space for our highest good. Wherever we are, we are in the perfect place to learn how best to live our lives. The happiness we have has already taught us how to achieve happiness, and the challenges we may face are there that we may find solutions to them and move on. We move on to a better understanding of what is best for us, and we learn and grow in wisdom. Every place is the perfect place for wise decisions to be made.
Wishing you the blessing of choosing your best possible life.....and peace, joy, and love, always.

Follow your dreams.
Friday, January 2, 2015
Today's thought: Follow your dreams.
"No trumpets sound when the important decisions of our life are made. Destiny is made known silently." Agnes deMille
Be still. Listen to the dreams of your heart and soul, and the paths will be made clear to you. Follow your dreams, follow your heart, and you will do what makes you happy.
Wishing you the blessing of awareness that you are in control of your mind, heart, and soul. You can make your dreams come true.
Peace, joy, and love, always

Happy New Year!
Thursday, January 1, 2015
Today's thought: Happy New Year!
From the beautiful writings of John O'Donohue, an excerpt from his book, "Anam Cara, A Book of Celtic Wisdom:"
"May the light of your soul guide you.
May the light of your soul bless the work you do with the secret love and warmth of your heart.
May you see in what you do the beauty of your own soul.
May the sacredness of your work bring healing, light, and renewal to those who work with you and to those who see and receive your work.
May your work never weary you.
May it release within you wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration, and excitement.
May you be present in what you do.
May you never become lost in the bland absences.
May the day never burden.
May dawn find you awake and alert, approaching your new day with dreams, possibilities, and promise.
May evening find you gracious and fulfilled.
May you go into the night blessed, sheltered, and protected.
May your soul calm, console, and renew you."
'Anam Cara' is Gaelic for 'soul friend.' John O'Donohue was an Irish poet, best-selling author, priest, and philosopher. I first read this work on Christmas Eve in a column in the "Tri-City Times," Imlay City, Mi., written by my niece, the News Editor for the paper. She had printed the above as her Christmas wish for the paper's readers. The blessings touched my heart, and I knew I wanted to share them with you and other friends. After doing some research into John O'Donohue's life and writings, I felt I had discovered a treasure of wisdom and spirituality, a priceless gift, and a soul friend. May these blessings also touch your heart and enrich your life.
May the coming year bring to each of you the best life has to offer; the awareness that God is always and everywhere with us, loving and protecting us; and the priceless gift of a soul friend.
Peace, joy, and love, always.
